Destin, Florida is most famous for its beautiful white sand beaches and spectacular natural beauty. Sometimes, however, the weather just doesn’t cooperate with your outdoor plans. Fortunately, the Emerald Coast is also home to a number of excellent museums that are perfect for a rainy day! To help you make the most of your next getaway, Vacation Happily has put together a guide to the three best museums near Destin FL.
1. Destin History & Fishing Museum
The Destin History & Fishing Museum is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon with your family. Guests will have the chance to step back in time to explore Destin’s fascinating past, with over 5,500 sq ft. of exhibit space covering the Emerald Coast’s Native American residents and the founding of the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”.
In addition to the history of Destin’s early inhabitants and founding families, the museum focuses on the city’s main industry: fishing. The walls of the building are lined with mounts of the area’s fish species, and the outdoor section of the museum is home to a number of historic fishing boats. There is also a popular exhibit dedicated to the Destin Fishing Rodeo, which is one of the Florida Panhandle’s most popular annual events.
Visitors to the Destin History & Fishing Museum can either enjoy a personal tour from a staff member of a self-guided tour with a headset. Children will love the museum’s fun scavenger hunt!
2. Air Force Armament Museum
The Air Force Armament Museum is another one of the best museums near Destin FL. Located at the Eglin Air Force Base, this popular museum traces the evolution of aviation warfare from World War I to the present. Guests will see over 29 different aircraft from across the decades, including planes from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War. Accompanying the airplanes are numerous guns, bombs, and missiles.
A highlight of the museum is the SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest plane ever built. This incredible aircraft could reach top speeds of around 2,455 miles per hour, which is three times the speed of sound!
3. Indian Temple Mound Museum
The Indian Temple Mound Museum is home to one of the Emerald Coast’s most unique historic sites. Around the year 800, Native Americans living on the Florida Panhandle created a large earthen mound that lay at the center of their village. The mound was a platform for the village’s temple and the residence of the chief. When a chief passed away, he was buried in the mound.
Today, visitors can see the mound for themselves and tour a museum dedicated to the 12,000 years of Native American history in the Destin area. In addition to the Indian Temple Mound Museum, the historic area also features a schoolhouse from the early 1900s, a post office museum, and exhibits about Florida during the Civil War.
